'Without Himalayas, there won't be Ganga, Indus, Brahmaputra'

A framed photograph of the Himalayan mountain range hangs inside Dr Vishal Singh's office at the Centre for Ecology Development and Research in Dehradun.

"The Himalaya range is one of the youngest mountains which are evolving every day. It is the source of life. Our foremost duty is to preserve it," says Dr Singh, Senior Fellow and Executive Director, CEDAR.

"The Hindukush, Karakoram and the Himalayan range, directly and indirectly impact over 2 billion people -- 1/4 of the entire population of the world," he tells Rediff.com's Archana Masih in the concluding part of his interview discussing nature's repeated warning signs in Uttarakhand.

You spoke about the need to decongest towns in disaster prone areas like Joshimath, Nainital, Karnaprayag. If it is not possible to do that, how can these towns be saved? How can balance in such places be restored?

We need to decongest. We need to explore areas that are not prone to disasters where people can still have the same lifestyle.

If we can't decongest, then the alternative is to replace the current housing patterns and infrastructure with more traditional infrastructure that can withstand earthquakes and is less impacted with largescale subsistence.

Why was Kalagarh which has a lot of open space to carry out development activities not declared as the state capital? Yet Dehradun was selected and still continues to be a temporary capital. Everything has been developed around it, while other places which required development have been ignored.

For a person who lives in Chamoli or Pithoragarh, it hardly makes a difference whether s/he was in UP or Uttarakhand because Dehradun is as far as Lucknow.

The state's development has been concentrated in the four districts of Dehradun, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital and Haridwar. Life hasn't changed much in the rest of the nine districts.

IMAGE: The Tapovan-Vishnugad hydro power project, built by NTPC, at Tapovan near Joshimath. Photograph: Anushree Fadnavis/Reuters

Isn't there a need to have a very focussed environmental action plan for the immediate future to arrest the damage and avert disasters?

We need to go back to the drawing board in terms of what should be the strategy for the next ten years. We need to come up with solutions which are more nature based. Some amount of economy needs to be created in other districts of the state to build infrastructure and create life around sleepy towns.

Earlier, the migration was to Delhi and Lucknow, now it is to Dehradun and Udham Singh Nagar.

Migration gives access to some amount of money and a smartphone, but overall the quality of life has gone down drastically.

Medical and educational facilities need to improved. Earlier, the school headmaster lived in the village and was an important person in the community, but now the headmaster lives in the closest urban centre. He commutes to school every day. What difference can you make if you spend just a few hours in the school?

Overall, there is a huge disconnect between people and policy.

Development has to be inclusive and awareness has to be created towards the environment and the natural capital, but that is not the way we have progressed so far and the results seem to be disastrous.

We had the Malpa landslide in 1998, the Uttarkashi earthquake, the Ukhimat landslide [2012] the Himalayan tsunami in 2013, subsidence in Joshimath [2023]. Every year we have forest fires and something significant.

Nature has given enough warnings.

In geological terms, can you explain why the Himalayas are so fragile?

The Himalayas are one of the youngest mountains. They are not stable mountains like the Andes [South America]. These are sedimentary rocks which have hardened over many years, but in geological time it is a very small period.

The Himalayas are evolving. Every day there is some movement going on and the Indian plate is still pushing the Tibetan plate, therefore, these processes will continue.

In terms of geology, the Himalayas are a result of disaster. Had the plates not collided and volcanoes not erupted, the Himalayas would not have existed.

The cost of not having the Himalayas would mean that there would be no Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra. There would be no northwest monsoon; or the fertile Indus and Gangetic plains with such biodiversity.

The Himalayas are the Creator of Life. The Hindukush, Karakoram and the Himalayan range, directly and indirectly impact over 2 billion people -- 1/4 of the entire population of the world -- and this is a conservative estimate.

Our foremost duty is to preserve it.

My inference: I got this from the internet. This is not Nostradamus or an astrologer saying this. It's the geologists who are warning us. What if it becomes like Dwarka(previously Lord Krishna's city, but now fully under water. There are scientific evidences proving that the city of Dwarka did exist near the present coast of Gujarat.) The ancient cities of Mohenjo daro and Harappa were also wiped out before.

Mumbai women dressed up for functions.

In metropolitan Mumbai, this is how beautiful women dress up for functions. Quite simple earth tones. It has been a trend since the movie 'Chandni' released. Yash Chopra used to present his heroines in a very  simple, but elegant look.

This is how I dressed up for Garima's annual day function.

For Garima's ninth birthday party, this was the look.

The photos are taken from the internet.

New convenient mode of transport

I couldn't believe or imagined what happened today ? Nearly four years ago, I should have explored it. Today morning I went through the short-cut kachha road from my house in sector 9, Ulwe to Bamandongri railway station. From there through train I traveled to CBD Belapur railway station and again from there through train to Sanpada railway station. I reached my destination with just ₹10. Why did I not do this before ? My traveling expenses, through bus, rickshaw and OLA cost me high, very high before. The route is convenient and cheap compared to the NMMT bus service which costs ₹45 from Kasturi Heritage Talav bus-stop to Sanpada sonkhar ie Moraj bus-stop. So much money would have been saved.

Henceforth I'll travel through railway only. It has been a convenient, time-saving and pocket-friendly experience.

Valentine's day 😘😘😘

This Valentine's day I've given myself a beautiful and sparkling gift. Without thinking about the politics behind it, we should just flow with the feeling of self-love.

It's an artificial ring, but my smile is for real.

Wedding makeup: Wish to do your own makeup for the big day? Here's a step-by-step guide to get you started

Sometimes, you just want to look the way you like during your special day. So, if you feel like ditching makeup experts, here's how you can still become the star of the party in simple steps.

The wedding season is here, and chances are you have your very own coming right up. Now, wearing a gorgeous outfit is not sufficient when it comes to getting ready for big occasions.

Makeup is also required to accentuate and finish the look, sometimes you just don't get the right makeup artist, or let's be honest, you are way too hesitant to have a bridezilla moment on your big day. In any case, you need to bring your A-game to the wedding and nothing beats the joy and thrill of decking yourself up like a diamond!
So, if you have made up your mind to do your own makeup, here's a step-by-step guide to nailing the perfect bridal look on your special day.
Step 1: Wash and carefully pat dry your face before applying makeup. Keep in mind that skin preparation is crucial. Hydrate your skin to attain the same results. Use a moisturizer that is appropriate for your skin type. A natural facial oil that promises to have more shine and glow is another option.
Step 2: Utilize a concealer that is a single shade darker than the colour of your skin. Apply this gently to any pigmented spots and dark circles you may have. Applying concealer is best done with a delicate brush or beauty blender.
Step 3: Apply a sufficient amount of foundation to your face using gentle dabbing motions. Always choose a foundation that complements the tone and texture of your skin. You can use BB cream if you don't want to wear foundation.
Step 4: To make the base blend seamlessly with your skin, use face powder.
Step 5: Using shimmer details, apply blush. If you have textured skin, using a matte-finish blush is your best bet. A highlighter can be used as well for that added glitz and sparkle.
Step 6: It is best to keep your makeup simple and fuss-free when doing it yourself. It is better to avoid using a lot of eye makeup. Shimmery eyelashes should be avoided because they can look overwhelming. Just curl those lashes and apply several coats of mascara. If you'd like, apply kohl and sleek eyeliner.
Step 7: It's time to colour the lips. Choose a colour that will go well with your chosen outfit. The majority of the time, a strong red or plum-pink lip colour works best. Apply a lip liner first, and then quickly and precisely fill in the lip colour.
Step 8: The brows are frequently forgotten when applying makeup along with the fact that doing the same would make your entire face stand out. Use the eyebrow highlighter and just brush your brows. To give it a natural appearance, use a highlighter with a brownish tinge.
Step 9: Setting your makeup is the last step after you are satisfied with it spray some hydration mist all over your face. It gives your face a layer of protection in addition to a glow.
My inference: I found this on the internet. The opinions of different beauty-experts may be slightly different, as far as the YouTube makeup coaching videos are concerned. But this one is good.

Life with Prashant 23 🤣🤣🤣

Prashant went to court today wearing a crisp white full-sleeve shirt 🤣🤣🤣. Is he going to do me lagna karnaar 🤣🤣🤣 again ? Speculations are rife among both Bhoirwadi and Ulwe kids' and housewives' circuits strongly. But its strictly okay for me- ye joke nahi toh koi aur joke, joke toh joke hota hai na 🤣🤣🤣. My marital issues were the staple breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner for many housewives' group across Dombivli, Navi Mumbai and some relatives in Karnataka who claimed they were deeply concerned and had herculean worries whether Prashant was getting sex on time. Some offered help to me and him both, calling me up and telling if we didn't stop fighting the woman would go for aa maran anshan 🤣🤣🤣. Prashant again started smiling and going out like before, saying he was doing this for saving the woman's life 🤣🤣🤣.

Since the time in February 2012, when I saw his photo for the first time, my mother went ga-ga over him- "he is an expert cook, there's no mother-in-law, good looks and... and... and... doesn't matter" "Doesn't matter what?" I helped her. "He is somewhat educated too, your father told me to tell you" my mother answered. My grandmother who was busy watching 'Meri Saasumaa Chor Hai' her favorite daily soap on TV and eating slices of cucumber, carrots and tomatoes seated on the sofa, added "These today's guys do MA, then BA and adding both of these, they get thoroughly confused themselves, lack of knowledge you know, they together call it M B A. Foolish guy" "He is under too much stress, that's what your granny wants to say" my mother explained to me very very calmly.

Today's chapatis were very bad. They were so rough and hard that there are bruises all over my mouth. Thank God our eternal Dara Singh 🤣🤣🤣 a k a Prashant Poojari didn't eat it . If he had eaten it, he would have given sleepless nights to his sister through phone calls to Karnataka. It's good to have a sister, I mean she always has free time to listen to her brother's frantic and foolish calls- "Bena, Priya ne chappati mein cardboard milaya tha. Mujhe kuch ho jaata toh ?" 🤣🤣🤣.

                         Prashant aur unki badi behen

Bas bas ab aur tingal nahi. 😇😇😇 😀😀😀 Yeah, feeling genuinely good. Bye bye folks. Wait for my more stunning photos. And don't forget to watch my podcast 'The Minal Show'. Its available in www.spotify.com and one episode will be uploaded daily. It's free of cost too. Bye babies and babaas. Watch out for more. 😘😘😘

Life with Prashant 22 🤣🤣🤣

What happened when Charles and Diana got married ?

What happened when Suzanne got married to Hrithik ?

What happened when Meher Jesia married Arjun Rampal ?

I too married Prashant.

Gorgeous married gorgeousness ! If I have to really describe this man, he's a 🤣🤣🤣 strange person, for whom the obvious and logic is not important. Okay, 🤔🤔🤔 I'll continue respecting him. I'll not make fun of him deserving respect. All humans should be respected. Even dogs, cats and horses need to be respected. That was evident when Kiara Advani's kaleera had a jewel design of her bridegroom Sidharth Malhotra's late pet dog Oscar... I can't afford a dog, well. I respect Prashant. So what, if he's not intelligent and does things without thinking. But yes, today's women do without fail, need to have intellect and self-respect in their personality. I'll teach that to my daughter too. One good thing about her ICSE school is that they teach value-system over there too. So I don't have to worry about, whether she is learning good-values and common sense which will be very essential for her in later life.

Men and their weird ways 🤣🤣🤣. Teaching lessons to others 🤣🤣🤣. God knows what they want to teach 🤣🤣🤣. Do women actually advise the right things to men about other women ? 🤣🤣🤣 Let it be. One amongst seven, or is it eight ? 🤣🤣🤣, can also tarnish the public-image of great-looking, intelligent and genuine woman like myself. My head holding high, respectable, wise and witty woman like me, will continue making the world a better place to live in with my sense-of-humour, beauty and intellect.

Ebooks, paperback books, blogs and now podcasts... good. But to make my mom happy, I'll be talking and give and take opinions of an intelligent family member.

Woman are intelligent than men, proved once again 🤣🤣🤣 🤣🤣🤣 🤣🤣🤣. Main nahi hasee.

'The Minal Show' podcast launch

In www.spotify.com 'The Minal Show' podcast has been launched. It is written and narrated by me. It is going to be a daily show where the main protagonist of the show is Ms Minal Kapadia. She is a crime journalist working for a prestigious news website. She resides in Mumbai with her family and is a strong persona. The show will be full of adventure and lots and lots of fun. Its free of cost also 🙂🙂🙂.

So folks, lets move around in a joyride with Minal...

No photoshop done

There was a time many years back when I was staying in Dombivli west, I stumbled upon a VCD of 'Sex And The City part 1' movie. I saw it and was blown away by it. I switched on Google chrome and went through the past behind this movie-masterpiece:
Writer Candace Bushnell had written a daily column series 'Sex And The City' in The New York Observer. It was so well-liked that a television series was made out of it. Then came the books 'Sex And The City', 'Is there still sex in the city' and 'the Carrie diaries'. Many years later 'And just like that' was also made and aired. Two movies- 'Sex And The City' part 1 and 2 were also made and were successful. Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte were loved by all women and teenage girls.
💋 Being fashionable is very important.
💋 Makeup, hairstyle, hair color, designer-clothes, sling bags, shoes, stylish fashion jewellery and fashion bible- Vogue should be supreme diet of all women.
💋 Dating rich men who can ofcourse afford diamonds as surprises is the in-thing to do, whether it is encrusted in a shoe or a ring doesn't matter.
💋 Female bonding and me-time among women was what it promoted.
💋 Financial independence among women shown here was also something that caught my eye.
Many years later it was 'Student Of The Year-1' directed by Karan Johar which again resurrected fashion and designer labels. Alia Bhatt(Shanaya Singhania) married the blue-blood of Bollywood Ranbir Kapoor who was the hottest single man then, who could afford diamonds and along with that looked very very handsome too was her man in real life. He had dated the other financially independent and fashionistas Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif before. Style-guru and Love-guru Karan's teachings and ideologies inspired her I guess. Just like what happened in the film... Good one Karan. We agree, you are our Candace Bushnell.

Life with Prashant 21 🤣🤣🤣

Modern relationships vol 3- some insights:

Myth 1: Should there be love in a relationship ?

Reality: No, your husband should be scared of you.

Myth 2: What can a wife do, if her husband sleeps around, it's sad.

Reality: She can always put acid/boiling hot oil on his penis. This can be done easily even inside her home with a little help from her female relatives/close friends.

Myth 3: What to do if your husband has a terrible lying habbit, it's sad.

Reality: Do anonymous phone calls to all his various exes and tell them that his distant uncle passed away unexpectedly and has left ₹100 crores in his will to your husband and your husband insists on keeping it a massive secret, come what may.

Myth 4: What to do if your husband refuses to sign for the marriage certificate document, it's sad.

Reality: Stop giving him sex altogether.

Myth 5: Its sad if your husband cheats on you.

Reality: You can always stealthily put just the right amount of sleeping pills on his breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner.

Myth 6: Its not a man's mistake if the bindaas girls get attracted to his good looks and they tear-off their underwear and jump uncontrollably on him for immediate sex.

Reality: Tell your mother-in-law to wear a full burqa and arm her with a big, very sharp, thick and very strong pin and ask her to push the entire pin with full force in the other woman's butt. This can be done by four of her friends also dressed in a full burqa without uttering a single word. The four women, need to hold her both hands and legs very tightly till the job is done.

Myth 7: What to do if your husband is over smart and hatches various plans to make you feel sad, it's sad.

Reality: Don't utter a word in front of him, just call your mother for a two week trip to your home.

Myth 8: What to do if your the other woman is gorgeous and sexier than you, its sad.

Reality:

1. If you are forty and she is twenty, there may be wrinkles on your face. Wear prosthetics in such a case and with the right make up you can very easily look young and beautiful. Remember superstar Rajnikant in Robot 1 and 2.0. He looked just like he was in the eighties. He is a grand-dad in real life. But on the silver screen he looked very young and stylish.

2. If you are too fat, you can talk to your doctor and get bariatric surgery done by an expert doctor.

3. Even if your complexion is dusky, you can go through YouTube or approach an expert beautician and get the makeup done accordingly. It is possible to look good even if you are dusky or dark.

4. If your hair is too thin, you can always tie it in a high or low bun. With long fake hair or donut bun big or small, your hair can very well and very easily look thick, stylish and beautiful.

Google Bhagwaan, YouTube Bhagwaan aur Amazon Bhagwaan kya nahi kar sakte.

Google Bhagwaan ki... jai ho

YouTube Bhagwaan ki... jai ho

Amazon Bhagwaan ki... jai ho

Raat ke gyaarah baje hain. Strange man Prashant ne hi khud mujhe ye sab sikhaya hai. Kehta hai uske pyaar mein pagal hoke ladkiyon ne kya kuch nahi kiya. Well... interesting !

Coincidentally all the lipsticks were of the same color I wanted to buy since a very long time. Thank you. Your value-system is very good, girl. Hats-off to the school which groomed you.

Life with Prashant 20 🤣🤣🤣

                                no photoshop done

Prashant has now started creating new sentences. I think he's developed interest in Literature. This is his new style. He has developed this new personality after watching 'Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai' in YouTube. He loved Maya being rude but polished on TV and has just a while back started emulating her. Madness of a new kind now. My problems never get over y'know 🤣🤣🤣.

A man doing Accounts morning 9 to night 9 can never have any likeable qualities, I knew that. But when I told this to my mom, she slapped me. 😔😔😔. I've an idea- What if I elope with his best friend ? 🤣🤣🤣 But none of his friends are young and beautiful, that is any match for me 😔😔😔. But internet is a really really nice place, I know. It's not just knowing, but I'm confident. Well, this is supposed to be a comedy series. Lets wait for one more day. Let me think... 🤔🤔🤔. Waise... main tum logon ko kyun bataoon ? 😜😜😜 🤣🤣🤣. Mera matlab hai... mera matlab hai... main... main... main khud ko writing aur embroidery mein poori tarah se duba doongi. 😜😜😜 🤣🤣🤣 🤣🤣🤣 🤣🤣🤣.

Aye haye re bhartiya naari

Mardon ki ghulami karna

Tujhe pad gaya bhaari.

Ab intezaar kis baat ka hai ?

Khoobsurat shaklon par duniya ke

Main jaaoon waari waari aur waari.

Aankh aur kaan khule hum rakhte challenge,

Us pati ki chalne kaise dein, jo patni

ko kooda samajhna, sher-dili kahkar

Apna hi mazaak banakar

chal diye, chal diye, chal diye.

😜😜😜

Ajeeb kisam ka aadmi hai ye

Pagal nahi hai shana hai ye

Waise shaadi toh mujhe bhi nahi karni thi

Modern naari ka zamaana hai ye.

Pagal ke haath hum

kamaan kaise de dein ?

Jhooth ka bharna pada

bhaari jurmaana humein.

Paise dubadene pe

Bura toh laga humein

Paise se pyaar kar

Aadmi se mat kar, kehti hoon sabko main.

Isiliye toh log

Kutta paalte hain,

Ghar ka bhale hi kaam na kare

Izzat toh hoti hai, Jantu mein.

Itna bura bhi nahi

lagta hai

Paise jo doob gaye mere

Inse pyaar mera sachcha hai.

Mummy daddy toh bakwaas

Karte rehte hain,

Indian parents ko

Psychiatrists bhi kaise sehte hain.

Prashant ek aur baar

meri nazar mein gir gaya,

Itni mehnat ki usne

Jhooth ko sach, sach ko jhooth karne mein.

Aage se main careful rahoongi,

Iss Byah-vyaah mein

Fizool kharchi nahi karungi

Is tarah main.

Bhai-dooj, raksha-bandhan bhi tyohaar hai

Behen se toh inko bhi pyaar hai.

Bhai banana chahti hoon tujhe main

Tees August ko, kya tu taiyaar hai ?

                          🤣🤣🤣 🤣🤣🤣
